Global Food Pantry is FLIK’s new monthly series that explores pantry staples, flavors, and culinary traditions from around the world. Instead of spotlighting one dish, we highlight everyday ingredients and pair them with chef-tested recipes and practical shopping tips so you can bring these global pantry ideas into your kitchen.

This month: Foods of the Philippines. The health benefits of traditional Filipino cuisine come from a variety of wholesome ingredients, including fresh vegetables, seafood, legumes, tropical fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins that naturally support balanced eating. Popular dishes such as vegetable stew (pinakbet), grilled fish (inihaw na isda), and chicken adobo provide a combination of protein, fiber, and essential nutrients that support digestive health and sustained energy. Staples such as rice serve as an important source of carbohydrates, while vegetables including squash, eggplant, okra, bitter melon, and leafy greens deliver vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Seafood, a key part of many Filipino meals, provides heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and high-quality protein. Coconut, often used in dishes such as laing and ginataang gulay, contributes healthy fats and rich flavor when enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. Tropical fruits like mangoes, papayas, pineapples, and bananas offer vitamin C, potassium, and other beneficial nutrients. Ingredients such as garlic, ginger, onions, and calamansi add vibrant flavor while providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Together, these traditional foods contribute to overall wellness, balanced nutrition, and the rich culinary heritage that has made Filipino cuisine increasingly celebrated around the world. Don’t forget to check this month’s recipe packet for ways to bring foods of the Philippines into your home kitchen.
